    Goros Alicante Monastrell/Syrah '19

Juan Carlos López de Lacalle, who founded Bodegas Artadi in Rioja Alavesa in 1985, acquired the property of El Sequé, in Alicante, in 1999. El Sequé is located just outside the town of Pinoso, an area that makes what is considered locally to be among the best modern Alicante wines. He was drawn to the land here for its unique expression of Monsastrell (Mourvèdre), and he began working with Agapito Rico, a local producer experienced with Monastrell grapes in Jumilla. When the project began in 1999, it encompassed only 40 hectares of old vineyards, and that have grown to almost 200. Unlike the Navarra region, in which Rioja is located, here the climate is notably Mediterranean rather than Atlantic.

The Goros Alicante Monastrell is a great introduction to the Goros/El Sequé style and is made with 85% Monastrell (Mourvèdre) and 15% Syrah—two varieties that create the backbone of the perhaps better-known GSM blends of the Rhône Valley. It’s rare to find an expression of Monastrell in such an elegant, approachable style. The fruit is sourced from vines that are up to 40 years in age, grown on clay-limestone soils with a sandy surface. The wine is fermented in vat, then aged for six months in used French barriques.

On the nose, the wine shows notes of dark cherry, blackberry, cocoa, dried sage, and a hint of black pepper and olive. A great balance of fruity and savory flavors, with moderate-plus tannins and acidity, the wine is a great match for grilled or roasted meats as well as hearty soups and stews.
